Celebrating Wonder Woman Day

Wonder Woman Day Cheek Of It Burlesque Tigz Rice Studios

Today, October 21st, has officially been declared as Wonder Woman Day.

Marking the 75th anniversary of Wonder Woman’s first appearance in DC’s All Star Comics #8,  the United Nations are holding a ceremony at their New York Headquarters, inviting the original star of the 1975 TV series Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter to be part of the celebration. In a statement, Carter said “to honour Wonder Woman and women all over the world is just amazing” – and with that in mind it seemed fitting to celebrate some of the wonder women in my life today on the blog.

First up is Miss Honey Bare, who has been my resident hair and make up artist at Tigz Rice Studios since 2011. Originally trained in fashion design and pattern cutting, she fearlessly followed her dream to become a freelance hair and make up artist, specialising in retro, avant grade and alternative styling  – and has never looked back. What I love about Miss Honey Bare is that she is not afraid to break those creative rules. If she’s on a shoot with me, I know my clients are in the best hands.

Lady May Den Voyage, the fire-eating, award-winning Glamazon of the London burlesque scene, is also one of my wonder women. Head girl and teacher at The Cheek Of It burlesque school, Lady May’s dedication to supporting and guiding the future generations of burlesque is incredible – having choreographed the Wonder Woman themed burlesque Troupe act above earlier this year.. She is a confidant for many and a bright sparkle of love and support in the glittering burlesque community. On top of burlesque, she as a passionate advocate for body confidence – having appeared in Cosmopolitan, Woman, and a front cover shoot for Inspiration Magazine.

And finally, my mum. She deserves wonder woman status just for putting up with me for so long(!) but also, she’s my rock. She’s fantastically honest and always tells it like it is, which I love and admire. She is generous and supportive and – along with my dad – taught me the life skills I needed to run my own business, which I will always be thankful for.

Who are the wonder women in your life? Comment below so I can check them out too!
