Occasionally, I happen to meet someone that I feel I NEED to photograph. Most recently, it happened with burlesque performer Didi Derriere.
I first met Didi Derriere through The Cheek Of It Burlesque School, when she performed her debut solo act on stage at the Christmas graduation show at Madame Jojo’s in Soho. Even from that moment, it was clear that she was destined for great things on the stage. Going on to win Burlesque Idol in 2015, it was only a couple of weeks later that Didi Derriere returned to The Cheek Of It to show off her crown and do a guest performance that wowed the crowds. A week or two after the show, I approached Didi and we found a date in the diary for April.
Having created some inspiration boards and discussed styling, we decided to hold the shoot at mine. I’m not normally a fan of white walls, but the natural light that fell through the windows had a great tone that gave life to the bare walls. Pulling the sofa over towards the window and dressing it with the sheepskin rug usually in the centre of the room, Didi paired her What Katie Did lingerie and Louboutins with my favourite leopard print robe from Betty Blues Loungewear.
I really love these images. I’m completely biased because I took them, but I’m proud to be able to share them with you in my portfolio. I can definitely feel myself leaning towards something new in terms of style. With a few more shoots like this, I’d like to see where my creativity goes.
A huge thank you to Didi Derriere for collaborating with me on this shoot. Also, for stretching me out of my comfort zone and being such a wonderful person to photograph. Didi and I also shot two further looks on the day, which will feature on the blog very soon. In the mean time, I’ve shared a selection of the final images below.
