The concept of a voyeur style boudoir shoot has been bouncing around in my mind for a little while now. After meeting both Jan Scholz and Ryan Muirhead, who were also teaching at Photography Farm earlier this year, I’ve found myself inspired to really push out of my photography comfort zone, push some boundaries and try new things. Luckily, I have some incredible friends who are willing to step out of their own comfort zones too and support me on my journey. One of those incredible friends is Joanna.

Joanna is certainly no stranger in front of my camera. Since our first pin up inspired shoot back in 2011, we’ve had a fun journey exploring cabaret concepts, lingerie photography and even  spot of boudoir. We had already been talking about putting a bridal boudoir shoot date in the diary in the lead up to her wedding day – and with ideas brewing for this voyeur style boudoir shoot, the theme was set and we picked a day for me to bring over my camera.

It was a beautifully sunny day outside, which offered great levels of natural light in the two rooms we chose to shoot in. Starting downstairs in Joanna’s guest bedroom, I was drawn to the throw on the bed, breaking up the plain white walls with a hint of pattern and colour. Starting with some silhouette work to highlight Joanna’s curves, I shot into the light from outside the bedroom door before working round the room and shooting through the brass bed frame.

Later that afternoon, we moved upstairs into the other bedroom, which was complete with a vintage chair and dresser visible from the doorway. The light in the corner of the room was perfect for creating moody images, offering high contrast between the interior of the room and the darkness of the door frame from the unlit hallway.

Usually on a boudoir shoot, my clients will start with more on, working down to their lingerie or nude when the client feels comfortable to do so. On this occasion, knowing we were going to be shooting a few art nudes, it was easier for us to start with the art nudes and then work back up through Joanna’s collection of lingerie to avoid any indentation markings from the lingerie on the skin. It also meant there was very little editing done on these images, apart from some exposure tweaks, white balance and the odd flyaway hair.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Joanna for allowing me to share her Voyeur series of images on my blog. It was such a great shoot and I’m so happy to be able to experiment with and gain more experience shooting art nudes.
