What should I wear for a Boudoir Shoot?

Sep 13, 2018 | Boudoir, Lingerie

One of the most common questions I get asked by my clients is “what should I wear for a boudoir shoot?” – which isn’t too surprising as for many of us a boudoir shoot goes beyond the realms of our day to day lingerie drawer! If you’ve got a shoot coming up, sit back, relax and have a read of my top tips below for inspiration and help planning your outfit – and don’t forget, you can get your free copy of my more detailed Prepare for Your Boudoir Shoot PDF guide when you sign up to my mailing list just to the right of this post!

What should I wear for a Boudoir Shoot

A great outfit usually has great foundations, so if you’re a bra-wearing human, treat your breasts to a bra fitting and make sure you’re currently wearing the right size – your body will thank you for it! Over the last few years, I’ve been lucky enough to have mine done by the team at Curvy Kate during lingerie events, but Rigby & Peller are renowned for their exceptional fitting service. Alternatively, my go-to high street bra fitter is Marks and Spencer, who have always done a pretty awesome job for me in the past. Equally, if you’re more of a bralette, or no bra at all, person – you do you!

Whilst it might be tempting to go for skimpy knickers or a thong, be aware that some styles can dig into your hips which can be uncomfortable. Bigger knickers can be sexy in the right fabrics and will help shape you without being restrictive; there is a lot to be said for high waisted pants and French knickers! Kiss Me Deadly’s range of knickers are particularly popular with clients, and are worth checking out.

Stockings tend to be more flattering on the thighs than hold-ups – with What Katie Did being a firm favourite with clients. Be sure to bring a couple of pairs in case you get any ladders or snags in them. You’ll also need a suspender belt to hold your stockings up. However, stockings are not an absolute requirement for a boudoir shoot. Whatever you choose, be comfortable.

Looking for some gender-neutral lingerie options for your boudoir shoot instead? From ‘I woke up like this’ loungewear to full boudoir glam, there’s a beautiful variety of options out there and it makes for a fabulous list, so I’ve written an entirely separate post – with links – to help you pull together your very own gender-inclusive lingerie collection and prepare for your next boudoir shoot with me.

If you’re wanting to wear a corset, buy it in advance and get used to wearing it for a few hours at a time – it’s important that you get used to the fit. If it’s your first ever corset, I’d suggest going no more than 4 inches smaller than your natural waist measurement. My favourite off the peg design for those buying their first ever corset is the Extreme Morticia Nouveau from What Katie Did. Alternatively, try a corselette or a basque; they are less restrictive but will still shape you without compromising on movement.

Accessorise! Perhaps you’ve a piece of jewellery that means a lot to you; something that’s been bought for you by your beau or inherited from a family member. From sparkly earrings to a string of pearls, bring your magpie collection along and we’ll make you feel sparkly too.

The higher the heels, the better! Shoes finish off an outfit and heels will help give you better posture and a fab leg shape. Right now, position your feet if you were wearing high heels – I bet your back straightens up and you lift your head! Don’t worry too much if you can’t strut down a catwalk in them; just make sure they match your outfit, that the soles are clean and any labels on the bottom are removed.

There are gorgeous nightwear and loungewear sets out there. Babydolls, chemise, playsuits, kimonos and dressing robes are gorgeous and can be used to cover up areas that you’re perhaps a little self-conscious about. Or be like Immodesty Blaize pictured here and break all the rules by wearing a dress or gown that you love. Your boudoir shoot, your rules!

Finally, remember that no one can see the size label in your lingerie, or your clothes – so size for comfort instead. After all, style and comfort have no size limit and absolutely won’t compromise on your sexiness!
