When I found out ‘Super Heroine’ was the theme of this term’s graduation show, I knew it was going to be one of my all time favourites.
Those of you who know me well will already know that I am a huge girl geek. Cameras and technology aside, I’m also a bit of a gamer and a lover of all things Marvel/DC. With that in mind, there are very few things in the world of burlesque that would excite me as much as a troupe of eight Wonder Women stepping out on stage as their burlesque debut.
The Cheek Of It are London’s leading school of burlesque, providing a range of courses to suit every performance level. Having photographed their graduation shows since 2010, it has been a privilege to witness some of the UK’s best burlesque performers’ journeys to the stage, including Burlesque Idol winner Didi Derriere (2015), Pearl Grey (2014) and Luna Peach (2013).
With 15 new Spotlight performers and one Showtime troupes, Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club in Bethnal Green was buzzing with energy. From fan dances and traditional striptease to balloon pops and splosh acts, the variety and creativity from the Spotlight performers was incredibly inspiring. As for the Showtime troupe, they brought their super heroine A-game. I’m now seriously considering investing in my own Wonder Woman outfit to become part of their squad!
If you’ve been thinking of taking burlesque lessons, I thoroughly recommend The Cheek Of It. Check out their website for more information on courses, one day workshops and special events. I hear the Summer Siren course is just about to start, so snap your place up now!
As always, there are hundreds of photos from the Super Heroine graduation show. I have selected a few of my favourites from the night and featured them below.
