It has been quite a while since I last photographed a cabaret show. What with 2014’s busy schedule and the recent closures of Volupte, Madame Jojo’s and several other venues, it felt really good to be back at Cafe De Paris last weekend to photograph Cabaret Des Distractions; a new Friday night offering in the heart of London. Inspired by the Féeries of 19th century Paris, Cabaret des Distractions is a classic tale of love and temptation for a 21st century audience. Cabaret, musical theatre and circus break bread in the opulent surrounds of Cafe De Paris’ 1920’s ballroom.promising gasps of awe, roars of laughter and whoops of excitement as the cast leads us through a labyrinth of unexpected turns.
What I loved about the show was the story line, bringing an other worldly narrative to the variety of circus, burlesque and fire acts gracing the stage. It also brought together some of my favourite faces from the world of entertainment, including fire breather Chrisalys, hula hoop artist Anna The Hulagan and compere Reuben Kaye – who I’ve been wanting to get in front of my camera for a while now!
I’ve included some of my favourite images from the night below. If you’d like to experience Cabaret Des Distractions for yourself, you can find more information and tickets on the Cafe De Paris website.
