Those of you that follow the blog will know that I’m a huge fan of the London show Cabaret Roulette, and it was an absolute privilege to have been invited back this month for ‘Transitions’. A fabulous theme in itself for the stage, it was also perfectly timed to represent the next incarnation of Cabaret Roulette – although it wasn’t announced live at Dealer’s Choice in November, shortly after the event Vivacity Bliss announced that she had passed custody of the show over to drag artist Crayola the Queen, who will be running all future Cabaret Roulette events. Whilst Vivacity Bliss will be greatly missed by all, I’m so unbelievably happy that the show will live on through Crayola!
If you haven’t seen Cabaret Roulette before, here are the details: Launched in November 2012, the show has a simple goal: to shake up the cabaret scene by throwing out old ideas, empowering audiences and challenging artists to push beyond their comfort zones. With a central theme, chosen in advance by the audience, eight carefully handpicked and curated artists – representing a cross-section of the differing disciplines of cabaret – have two months to create a brand new act with their individual take on that theme. The last Cabaret Roulette show theme was Extravaganza – which you can find on the blog here.
Featuring cabaret star Dusty Limits, multi-skills burlesquer Kitty Campari, neo-burlesque performer Lolo Brow, lip-sync clown Mahatma Khandi, corporeal mime Pi The Mime, neo-boylesque Prinx Silver, micro theatre Rubyyy Jones and telenovela comedienne Veronica Montenegro, the event was compered by the glorious Crayola the Queen and stage-managed by Dan Phibian at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
Cabaret Roulette Highlights
As always, here are a few of my favourite moments from Cabaret Roulette: Transitions in image form. My moment of the night goes to Crayola the Queen for managing to squeeze a Jurassic Park worthy dinosaur impression into the opening number of the show!
