When I started working on my coffee table book STRIP/TEASE, I sat down and made a – well, let’s call it a bucket list – of all the incredible performers in the global community I have always wanted to work with. It was a looooooong list, but right at the top was Drag Queen Sideshow nut and Lizard Lady Lolo Brow. As one of London’s “Female Drag Queens”, a few years before, I’d had the distinct pleasure of watching her perform Captain Consumerism at a House of Burlesque event in London and the entire concept, from choreography to costuming, blew my mind. Those of you who know me well will know of my weird aversion to the colour green and that it never appears in my portfolio, but when its Lolo Brow, YOU MAKE AN EXCEPTION.
Lolo Brow is just one of the 68 performers featured in my new book STRIP/TEASE – which is now available to purchase in both the UK and the US. Want to know more about Lolo Brow? Read on…
Lolo Brow
Occupation: Drag/Burlesque/Fire/Sideshow/Lizard Performer. Or “Super Villan” for short
How would your best friend describe you? A. Bossy. Mess!
Name three things that you always carry with you? My Leatherman, Tequila and Existential dread
What was the last book you read? The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami. It was my third attempt to read it and it was worth it.
What inspired you to book a photoshoot? I have been perving on Tigz’s work since I had started dicking around on stage. In the Burlesque Industry, there are a few personal career milestones/accolades – performing at a certain venue, buying your first boa, headlining your favourite show. One of those milestones for me was shooting with Tigzilla!
Who would play you in a movie of your life? Jafar…. yes, I read the question properly.
Whats the most interesting thing about you that the internet doesn’t know about you yet? 9pm bed time… is the sexiest thing anyone could say to me.
Tell us about one of the outfits you wore for your shoot – why do you love it? The Skeleton outfit is called Captain Consumerism. It’s the heaviest thing I’ve ever worn, the material, the rhinestones and detail are all glorious. I created this act in collaboration with many artists, Nothing makes me happier than working with different disciplines. I hired a wonderful theatre costume creator; Bevans to make the bodysuit, a very talented body painter Victoria Guggenheim to paint the skeleton on it. Then hired my sister drag queen and costume genius Bourgeoisie to make that glorious huge coat and the ever so badass Harlett Von Charlotte to paint my face prosthetic. I then brought in my fellow LAD and sister Scarlett O’Hora to help me choreograph the movement with the costume. I love collaboration. I love watching a simple brief grow and move when you bring in other artists. I consider myself very lucky to be surrounded by so many talented and inspiring humans, This costume always reminds me of that.
Describe your shoot experience? LOLS… empowering… but also Lols
What song gets you on the dancefloor? September by Earth Wind and Fire. You can not be sad listening to that song, it brings out my drunk mum dance.
What are you most proud of in your career so far? It’s lame but when I learnt to budget my work. I got to a point where I could look at my books and afford a cab home after a long Saturday night if I needed. I know its dull and to some people in salaried jobs may think this is small and silly, not understanding the feeling of standing on your own 2 feet like this. But I remember it so well even though it was a few years ago.
What is your top body confidence tip? Two things help me on days when I look at my body and don’t like what I see. 1. Listening to the critical internal monologue and understand they are just thoughts all though they are valid they are not real or fair. Then I shift those thoughts by being grateful for all the things my body does and I start saying nice things to my body Like – “thank you, that hangover should have been way worse” 2. Masturbation. Honestly.
What will your autobiography be called? The Crusty Gusset – A lifetime of Bad Advice by Lolo Brow
If you could be a model for any brand, which brand would it be and why? Whiskers… I spend far too much on cat food, so some freebies would be nice.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about booking a session of their own? If you haven’t done many shoots and being in front of a camera is new to you, Know that Tigz has got your best interest in mind, trust them to guide you through it.
What exciting project are you working on right now? [Written during UK lockdown] I am figuring out what the hell happens next if I am honest. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to take time to plan my next move. Please keep an eye on my social media for my attempt to cheer up/distract the world.
