An Interview with: Burlesque Performer Marnie Scarlet

Dec 18, 2019 | Boudoir Interviews, Burlesque, Interviews

Back in the very early days of my photography career, I was lucky enough to meet the inimitable Marnie Scarlet: Performance Artist, Multi Media Artist and ‘The Queen of Freak Cabaret’. Its been so long that my memory is hazy on the exact moment we met, but suffice to say her fantastically unique qualities as a performer made quite an impression on me and – since our first shoot on the giant chessboard – we’ve worked together at least once a year, every year, for almost an entire decade. So, of course, when it came to approaching burlesque performers for the my book STRIP/TEASE, it was so important for me to have Marnie involved in the project.

Describe your burlesque persona in exactly 5 words: What The Hell Was That??

Tell us about your best ever burlesque moment. What happened? Who was there? I reckon the BEST is still to come (in a glass-half-full sorta way)

Name three things that you always carry with you: Gaffer Tape, Eyeliner, Lipstick

What inspired your burlesque journey? A desperate need for attention hahahaha!

Who would play you in a movie of your life? Animal of the Muppets

What’s the most interesting thing about you that the internet doesn’t know about you yet? Omg if I told you I would have to self destruct!

Tell us about your shoot experience with Tigz! It is always awesome to shoot with Tigz. We have done it all: indoors, outdoors, giant chessboards… always an adventure. Always super fun!

What song gets you on the dancefloor? Fame by Irene Cara

Best achievement or moment that you’re most proud of in your career? Not sure about one particular moment. I always love meeting people who have been positively influenced by my work. Also, on another level, I have been proud of the various wonderful stages in far away lands I have graced throughout the years.

What is your top striptease tip? Alwys connect with your audience, if anything fails you will have them on your side

If you could be a model for any brand, which brand would it be and why? ACME because I’m after a lifelong sponsorship and in need of an anvil

What will your autobiography be called? Stretching The Imagination – A Life in Latex (baaaadaaaboooom I know)

What exciting project are you working on right now? I am aiming to get The Matter Hatter out in public in 2020. He will be my 4th wonderland character.

Favourite burlesque festival/show to perform at? Ooh so many I couldn’t choose. I have been fortunate to have been part of many amazing events all over the globe of many ilks, burlesque, queer, fetish and drag events. In the UK The Double R club is an excellent event.

Most inspirational/memorable performer you’ve seen? I have been lucky to see a wide variety of awesome performers of various skills. It would be hard to pick. So many great ones. Betsy Rose, Banbury Cross and Lolo Brow are all great amongst others
