An Interview With: Burlesque Performer Silly Thanh

Dec 28, 2018

One of my favourite things about the burlesque industry is that it brings together incredible humans from all walks of life. From teachers and florists to skilled crafters and medical professionals. Some have PHDs and pilots licenses, whilst others are fluent in more than four languages. Silly Thanh is just one of those incredible and inspiring performers. Based in Geneva, Silly Thanh has flown over to the UK twice now to shoot with me and every time she blows me away with her knowledge and her incredible stories. It is my privilege to present to you an interview with burlesque performer Silly Thanh, along with some images from our first shoot in 2016…

Silly Thanh

Occupation: Burlesque artist and medical doctor

How would your best friend describe you? The most introvert hyperactive hypersomniac

Name three things that you always carry with you? My phone, hair band, honesty

What inspired you to book a photoshoot? I wanted to show off the first elaborate costume I made and push my self confidence in front of a lens

Who would play you in a movie of your life? Me

Whats the most interesting thing about you that the internet doesn’t know about you yet? I am the best mosquito repellent product: if you travel with me, you won’t be bitten because I’ll have all the bites

Tell us about one of the outfits you wore for your shoot – Who made it? it’s a Ziegfeld girl inspired costume, which started with a theater black corsage i found in a second hand shop in Amsterdam. I then added new and vintage pieces, embellished them. Laila Verseput from Elegant Curiosities made the headdress and Fancy Feathers dipped the tips of Black feather favs in gold.

Why do you love it? Because it was a long personal journey into sewing, frustration and learning skills.

What song gets you on the dancefloor? Any kind of music as long as I am with friends

What are you most proud of in your career so far? I am always amazed and grateful when audience people come to thank me for my performance after a show

What is your top body confidence tip? Smile and laugh at yourself

What will your autobiography be called? She Stripped and Healed

If you could be a model for any brand, which brand would it be and why? Lonely Planet so that I could travel and eat as much as I want with the excuse of working

What exciting project are you working on right now? SweeTease is my baby, a fine burlesque show I am producing in Geneva twice a year. I hope it will blossom and give joy to the artists and audience as much as it gives me panic attacks while organizing it.

So go on, mark a life milestone, reward a personal achievement or simply document your fabulous self in all your glory.
