Silhouettes: The House Of Q

Silhouette: [noun] /ˌsɪl.uˈet/ A dark shape and outline visible in restricted light. Also, the theme of my recent promotional shoot for The House Of Q.

The House Of Q are a cabaret collective formed of burlesque vixen Felicity Furore (who you may recognise from my boudoir workshop in Lanzarote earlier this year), musical magician Neil Kelso and gender-bending clown Alexander Luttley. Championing high quality, accessible and varied cabaret for audiences and events worldwide, they are just about to launch their new show Silhouettes, “a sinister evening of noir, suspense and moral ambiguity.” My kind of show! After a couple of phone calls and with a date set in the diary, the four of us packed our suitcases and jumped in an Uber headed for The Looking Glass Cocktail Club in Shoreditch.

Drawing off the Silhouettes title and the nod to film noir in the show description, the idea was to create a series of heavy contrast, monochromatic portraits that could sit together as a triptych to promote the show. Using the invisible black backdrop effect to completely eliminate any background information, these images were illuminated using one Elinchrom ELB400 head and a strip softbox only a foot or two away from each of The House Of Q cast members. The light was also placed slightly behind each cast member, plunging half of the face into shadow.

Working with The House Of Q cast was such an incredible day. Their personalities harmonise so well as a collective that I can’t wait to see them on stage. I went home from the shoot on a complete high note, in awe of their combined talents and secretly wishing I was part of their gang!

The final Silhouettes triptych are featured below. I bumped into Felicity and Neil this week at Cabaret Roulette and they gave me a couple of the official show flyers too, which I will make sure I post on social media in the next day or two so you can see what they did with the images. As a photographer, there is nothing better than seeing your images in print, so this was an extra little highlight on top of an already incredible week.

The debut of Silhouettes will be on Thursday, 28 July 2016 at The Looking Glass Cocktail Club. If you fancy coming too, doors are 7pm and tickets available to purchase from Eventbrite.
