Having photographed The Cheek Of It burlesque school graduations since 2011, Easter just wouldn’t be Easter without one!
A couple of weeks ago, I was invited back to Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club to photograph the next generation of Cheekettes take to the stage as part of the Spring Awakening showcase,
For those of you who haven’t come across The Cheek Of It before, they are London’s leading school of burlesque and cabaret, providing a range of burlesque courses to suit every level of performer. With graduates including Felicity Furore, Tabitha Taboo and 2015 Burlesque Idol winner Didi Derriere, The Cheek Of It has a reputation for producing many of the rising stars of the modern burlesque scene.
With 11 new spotlight performers and two troupes, the stage was buzzing with energy all evening and it was a privilege to be able to document the journey of so many women take their first glittery steps into the world of burlesque. We were also treated to a guest performance by graduate Felicity Furore, who you may recognise from my recent Art Of Boudoir masterclass blog post. I haven’t seen Felicity perform for several years and it was such a pleasure to watch her perform and see just how much she’s evolved as an artist. There was a lovely surprise at the end of the evening too, with Lady Cheek herself being crowned with her very own tiara!
There were hundreds of photos taken at the Spring Awakening graduation show, but here are a couple of my favourites from the night. If you’ve been thinking of taking burlesque lessons, I thoroughly recommend The Cheek Of It. Check out their website for more information on classes, workshops and special events – I hear the next term is just about to start, so snap your place up now!
