Over the past year, I’ve been working with UK based fuller bust lingerie brand Scantilly on their new campaign #TheNewSexy.
According to a report by The Fashion Spot, only 21.8% of the 422 models involved in the biggest SS16 campaigns were of colour. 1.4% of models were above a size 12 and no transgender models were used at all. Celebrating diversity in women, Scantilly’s campaign aims to shake up those figures and prove to the industry that there is more than just one kind of sexy.
Arriving on location in Shoreditch, the venue was buzzing with energy. Hair stylist Jake Gallagher and make up artist Scarlet Burton were already set up and ready to go and, as the first models arrived, I unpacked my Elinchrom ELB400 lights ready for the shoot. The portable and lightweight set up was perfect for working across three floors of the narrow private member’s club with little access to a power supply – and I had to negotiate a LOT of stairs that day too!
Staggering the model arrival times gave us plenty of time to photograph/interview them individually before the groups shoot later on that day. The campaign features Curvy Kate’s Star In A Bra 2013 winner Lotte Williams and fashion/lingerie blogger Georgina Horne (@fullerfigurefullerbust). The campaign also features SuicideGirl Taylor (@RealLifePirate), UK lifestyle and advice blogger Gracie Francesca (@gracefvictory), transgender model Effie Van Cluysen (@Stephaniaeffie) award winning blogger and make up artist Joanne Larby (@Makeupfairypro), body positive ED warrior Megan Jayne Crabbe (@bodyposipanda) and alopecia awareness model Therese Hansson (@instabytess).
#TheNewSexy campaign was a huge celebration of body positivity and body confidence – and with that in mind, all of the published images, featured below, were all used straight out of camera, showing the model’s un-retouched bodies in all their stunning glory. It was important to get everything from composition and exposure to lighting set up exactly right in camera and balancing the overall appearance and tonal quality of the images across multiple rooms and scenes. With so many models, we were also running to an extremely tight schedule, and I needed to make sure we got plenty of variety from each model in a short amount of time, so that we didn’t overrun our allocated session!
It was such an amazing experience to work with these wonderfully unique women and I’m so happy with how the final series came together. I can’t even begin to find the words to describe how proud I am to have been part of this campaign. Of course, there is a whole world full of diversity out there, far more than can ever be represented by just eight women on one shoot. However, campaigns like Scantilly’s #TheNewSexy are huge stepping stones for the lingerie industry, hopefully marking the beginnings of a new era of commercial lingerie photography that represents all ages, sizes, colours, genders and abilities. What a fantastic experience it was to have worked with every single one of these women and it really is an honour to be able to share their photos with you on my blog. I left the shoot feeling so inspired by their positive energy and body confidence. I hope you love them as much as I do. The new collection will be available from mid September 2016. The Peek-A-Boo set in Chartreuse and Unleash are on my shopping list!
