Immodesty: Homage To Sophia

I had a brilliant time photographing burlesque sensation Immodesty Blaize at the end of last year in London, so I was excited to receive an email from Immodesty at the beginning of the year asking if I’d be interested in working together again for UK based, vintage inspired pin up magazine Tease and Cake. Launched in 2012, Tease and Cake’s aim is to recreate the vibe and style found in the original pin up magazines of the 1950s and early 60s, featuring the industry’s finest retro models, photographers, vintage pin up models and plenty more. Its been a privilege to feature in the magazine a few times over the years, so of course I was up for the shoot!

Whilst some photo shoots can take weeks of planning and problem solving to fit into everyone’s schedule, it seemed fate was on our side for this shoot, with everything seeming to fall into place perfectly. Choosing Italian screen siren Sophia Loren as our inspiration for the series with a little bit of Jane Mansfield camp-ness thrown in for good measure, we settled on a theme pretty quickly. We were incredibly lucky with the location too. On the same day that I had been posting on Facebook about wanting to shoot in ‘the amazing pink house’, it just so happened that very same pink house, Eaton House Studios, had been emailing Immodesty! I can’t begin to describe how amazing the house it – its even more amazing on the inside than it is on the outside, but I’ll save the details for the published feature…

The main focus of the shoot was a nude series for the magazine, which was shot upstairs in one of the boudoir rooms. However, we did have some time during the day to shoot this mini series, featuring Immodesty in a homage to Sophia Loren’s iconic look in The Millionairess. Complete with black corset, stockings, white gloves, some pearls and a fabulous hat, these images were shot in one of the living rooms downstairs. The room was flooded with gorgeous natural light, with front lighting to highlight the face and catch the eyes courtesy of my Elinchrom Quadras and a 135 Octa.
