2018 was an astonishing year for me, and 2019 is already shaping up to be just as eventful and thrilling. I’ve really enjoyed working on the interview series with past clients, and yet it didn’t occur to me that I should have an interview of myself until Sali – Queen of Social here at Tigz Rice HQ – said to me that people would probably like to know a little more about me and what I’ve been up to this year.
She’s tweaked some of the questions so that they are a little more about me personally and professionally, and it’s been quite nice to look back on the year and count up all the fun experiences I’ve had…
What’s been the best place you’ve travelled to this year?
Tough question! I always love visiting Gothenburg, it’s one of my favourite places in the world and everyone out there is really friendly and welcoming. I’ve been to Gothenburg twice during 2018 and I pick up a little more Swedish every time I’m out there. I have even managed to order a few meals (and gins) convincingly! Although Naples stole a little piece of my heart this year with its amazing food and views… I would like to go back with some more free time to explore.
What’s been the biggest or best achievement in 2018, personally or professionally? I think my biggest achievement of 2018 has been touring Europe with Miss Victory Violet. We’ve been able to bring our vintage boudoir makeovers to Gothenburg, Helsinki and Paris this year, meeting so many wonderful new clients and shooting in locations that dreams are made of! It has been so much fun and I’m really excited to start planning more makeover travel adventures with her for 2019.
What’s been the biggest challenge you faced in 2018, personally or professionally? With so much travel this year, it’s definitely been a struggle keeping that work/life scale balanced. It is something I’ve always struggled with, and every year I manage to delve a little closer to balance, though I’m still not quite there yet! That said, I’ve already booked in a few personal trips for 2019, so this is something I will be working on.
How many
What was your biggest learning curve in 2018? This year I became a Limited Company after trading for almost a decade as a freelance boudoir photographer. Getting my head around new procedures and setting up bank accounts whilst being constantly on the move this year has been hard work! I’m incredibly lucky to have such a great support network around me (especially Alex my accountant and Paul my Father-In-Law) who have been generous with their time and knowledge to help get me on the right path!
What has been your favourite piece of photography equipment that you’d have been lost without in 2018? I have to choose just one?! I guess it would be my Canon 5d MK4, my main camera, which usually has a 24-70 f2.8 attached to it. As long as I have that, I’m a happy woman!
What are you most excited for in 2019? My book! I’m super excited to be working with Working Class Publishing this year to create a beautiful coffee table book honouring my 10 years within the burlesque community. This will be a huge focus for me in 2019, so I apologise in advance for the next 12 months as I’m sure I’ll be talking about it constantly! On a personal level, I’m also really excited to be going on honeymoon to Japan with James. We’ve been looking forward to the trip for a while now – it is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit!
Any specific photography plans for 2019 that you can let us in on? Tour! I’m hoping to spread my wings even further this year, with more Europe makeovers as well as some more UK locations; the first of which has been announced here! If you have any suggestions for places that you’d like me to visit, pop me an email!
Top 5 dream clients for 2019; go! Dita Von Teese, Violet Chachki, Roxi D’Lite, Kitty Bang Bang and Dirty Martini. If any of you are reading this, please slide into my DMs and make my day!
How would your best friend describe you? I asked the wonderful Lady May and she said: “Badass Boss Lady. International jet-setting
Name three things that you always carry with you? iPhone, red lipstick and one of many giant scarves I own that double up as a portable blanket!
Who would play you in a movie of your life? I reckon Jennifer Lawrence would do an excellent job of being me…
What song gets you on the dancefloor? Right now I’m listening to Strip by Little Mix on repeat and would LOVE to see someone do a burlesque act to it. But usually, I’m a Calvin Harris or David Guetta kind of woman, with a little old skool garage thrown in for good measure!
What are you most proud of in your life so far? Supporting myself financially and building a career out of my love of lingerie and boudoir photography. Every day is different, and it’s hard work but so rewarding.
What is your top body confidence tip? Thoughts become words become actions. Make changes to your inner dialogue so that you are always body positive when admiring photos or your reflection. It won’t be long before you feel those changes in your talk, your walk, and probably the rest of your life also.
What will your autobiography be called? “Click”
